Juliette Lai was honored with the Federal Scholarship from the Malaysian Government, allowing her to pursue her studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama where she graduated with accolades, including awards for Best All-Round Student and Harmony & Counterpoint.
Serving as Head of the Music Department at the Malaysian Teachers College in Johor Bahru, Juliette also held pivotal roles such as Chairman of Committees for Curriculum Planning for Malaysian Teachers Colleges & Schools and Chief Examiner for the Malaysian O-Level Music Examinations.
As a multifaceted musician—conductor, pianist, accompanist, and singer—Juliette has had a dynamic career, performing and directing in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, North America, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and the UK.
From 1985 to 1993, Juliette was the Conductor of the National University of Singapore Choir. She then served as Assistant Conductor of the Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Singapore, from 1994 to 2001, leading the group to win 1st Prize at the Béla Bartók International Choral Competition in 2000. Additionally, she was the Music Director and Arranger for Vocaluptuous, Singapore’s premier contemporary a cappella group, from 2000 to 2004.
As a composer and arranger, Juliette’s choral works have been commissioned, published, and performed by numerous choirs in concerts and competitions globally. "Potong Padi," one of her arrangements, is published by earthsongs and is utilized for repertoire study at various choral symposiums. Another arrangement, "Bujang Lapuk," was nominated for the Malaysian Music Industry Award. The Time Ensemble (World Youth Choir Alumni) performed her arrangement of "Getaran Jiwa," and the Asia Pacific Youth Choir included "Burung Kakak Tua" in their concert tour repertoire.
