Lagenda Ulek Mayang [The Legend of Ulek Mayang] (SSAB)
Lagenda Ulek Mayang (The Legend of Ulek Mayang) is the song that accompanies a classical Malay dance from the state of Terengganu in Malaysia.
This is an ancient tale about a sea-princess who fell in love with a fisherman. The princess abducted the fisherman's soul, leaving his body unconscious. A bomoh (shaman) attempted to heal him. When the bomoh conducted the ritual, the princess appeared and responded by calling on her sisters to her aid. The battle between the bomoh and princesses continued until the seventh and the eldest princess appeared and put an end to the fight.
The eldest princess said "Let those from the sea return to the sea, and those from the land return to the land." Coloured rice is then presented by those from the land as an offering to the spirits of the sea.
This piece was originally arranged for SATB a cappella by Adyll Hardy, adapted for SSAB with piano by Gerald Tan.
