Manang Biday [Lady Biday] (SA)

Manang Biday is a teasing courtship folksong from Ilocos, northern part of the Philippines. Manang Biday is translated as ‘Lady Biday’, the object of the gentleman’s affection. The conversation is initiated by the boy expressing his interest and is then answered by Biday with a gentle rejection. This is typical of the Ilocana women to be modest. Sensing she is not interested; the boy changes the topic and instead says that he has chores for her. Hinting that she is also interested in him, Lady Biday sings about her handkerchief. They then sing together the last verse summarizing the moral of the song.
