Sigulempong/Ondel-Ondel/Tak Tontong (SATB)
This medley of Indonesian folksongs is but a small representation of the diversity in Indonesian culture. Sigulempong is a popular Bataknese folksong from North Sumatera. Ondel-Ondel is a song about a huge puppet figure from the Betawi in Jakarta. Tak Tontong is a Minang folksong from West Sumatra. The similarity of these three songs comes from the fact that they are used for festive and celebratory purposes. However, because they are from different cultural backgrounds, there is distinguishing rhythmic motifs unique to each culture. Towards the end, the music becomes a mixture of different melodic lines and rhythms, reflecting the blend of the various cultures in real life. The final exclamatory word horas, which does not come from any of the songs, is a Bataknese word representing a warm greeting.
