Rainbow (SSA)
Rainbow was commissioned by Voices of Singapore in an interdisciplinary showcase of Singaporean art works and choral works.
The composition of this song is in collaboration with the artist, Joyce Chong, and takes inspiration from her painting, Iridescent. The painting juxtaposes fiery hues of reds with softer tones of blues, signifying a transition from conflict and chaos to hope and positive outcome.
I found the messages in Joyce's work relatable to some recent incidents of my life and these memories contributed to the conception of this song. The angst of not being able to find answers for why the mishaps fell onto me is translated into the incessant pulsating rhythm. The pain of languishing is expressed by unresolving dissonances. The need to find acceptance and hope is conveyed by the consonant harmony and lightness towards the end of the song.
