Peribahasa [Proverbs] (SSA)
Peribahasa (Proverbs) is a unique arrangement of three Malay folk songs (Enjit Enjit Semut, Kopi Susu, and Ikan Kekek) and incorporates stylistic features such as the use of Asian polyphony and multi-melodic layering in a distinctive gamelan mode. Singers are also asked to imitate the gong and are encouraged to utilize a brighter tonal colour than traditional Western vocal production.
The text of this song is based on pantuns, or Malay quatrains. The subtext of the lyrics are figures of speech and symbolism that espouses traditional values and morals. In Kopi Susu, the young people are advised not to be anxious when they find their partners. At the same time, they are also warned of lust and excessive desire. In Ikan Kekek, the moral message is to prioritize being steady and calm in the face of adversity. The song encourages maturity and avoiding interfering in other people's affairs. It also tells us to not mindlessly follow others, lest we regret the consequences.
This children’s choir edition was originally arranged in SATB for the Singapore National Day 2019 recording of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and it was first recorded by the Singapore Symphony Chorus under Eudenice V. Palaruan.
